The 27K resistor is good however more cumbersome. If you use the auxiliary transformer however to give a 12v supply you must put a resistor in series with the output of the regulator line which supplies pin 1. The reason for this is because the overload protection will not work. There is more than enough current coming out of the 12v regulator and if the overload comes on the LED will light up but there will still be enough current and the voltage at pin 1 will not be pulled down.

If you make a comparison using the 27k resistor this will only supply a current of around 11mA. Hence 310 V / 27000 R = 0.011 A

You will still need to use a small electrolytic capacitor (around 10Uf) tied to pin 1 after the resistor I suggested. This will give some more time as it charges up for the main bulk capacitors to charge up to their full voltage.
