SMIF....(induction Furnace)

As there seems to be a wealth of experience in switching technology here, i was wondering if a design for an induction furnace would not be impossible.
Uses I am a knife maker and i am fed-up with breathing hydrocarbon smoke

You're correct. There are many parallels between SMPSs and induction heating. Many of the high-power MOSFETs, capacitors, SMPS driver ICs, and ferrite cores could be used for either. And, like so many circuits, a great place to start is Google! There are lots of people who have made some very impressive induction furnaces and have documented them on websites. There are even a couple people who have full websites detailing their projects including videos, schematics, gotcha's to look out for, etc. There are some guys in their garages running home-built 5KW furnaces.

It's amazing to see just a moderately sized induction furnace sitting there, but when a piece of metal is placed within the coil, the metal glows white-hot and even fully melts without touching anything! Crazy!
