What buck converter to select for 1kW microtig?

Hey all - pretty new to the world of SMPS but saw this forum and looks great! I have built a couple but at much lower power (think a couple of watts!) so this is a big step up for me. I am a very keen tig welder but have never built one before and would like to have something for microtig, both as a learning experience and also to allow me to play with parametres of arc etc.

I have been struggling to figure exactly what chips etc to use. I have 30A 36V battery I would like to use for power. Plan is to get CC out at up to 30 amps. I will only be using it for bursts of 30 seconds or so at a time then can let it cool down.

I looked at the LT1339 but I now reckon that something more modern with a higher switching speed would allow for much smaller caps/inductors etc. But I haven't been able to figure out what is best.. It would be great to have some guidance!

Thanks very much
